2025 Case Study:Large Storage, Smart Solar and Future-Ready EV Charging

Project Summary

The owners wanted an energy system that would dramatically cut grid reliance, provide reliable backup during outages, and allow them to charge their electric vehicle using their own rooftop solar – all while keeping upfront costs under control and maximising available rebates.

After reviewing multiple configurations, they chose a powerful 48 kWh battery, maximum-size solar array, 7 kW AC charger and a Gateway Backup, creating a robust, future-proof energy solution.

Key Features
48 kWh battery storage (maximum STC rebate)

By choosing the largest battery size eligible for Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), the client unlocked the maximum rebate and cut the true cost of the battery by about 50%, saving around $15,000. The large capacity means they can store more excess solar energy for use at night or during cloudy periods.

Gateway Backup for outages

With the Gateway Backup included, critical loads can keep running during grid interruptions, providing extra peace of mind for the household.

Smart EV charging – 7 kW AC charger

The homeowners opted for a 7 kW AC charger instead of a 25 kW DC unit, keeping installation costs lower while still providing convenient overnight charging. The system is designed with the option to upgrade to a DC charger in future, opening up V2X (vehicle-to-everything) capability as technology evolves.

✅ Maximum solar coverage without extra permits

The solar panel array was carefully designed to cover the maximum roof area possible without triggering the need for a minor building works permit, saving the client around $2,000 in additional application and compliance costs while still netting another $2,000 in solar STC rebates.

0% Interest Tasmanian Energy Saver Loan Scheme (TESLS)

By utilising the available $10,000 – 0% interest loan via Brighte Finance – the owners saved again by not drawing as heavily from their savings or mortgage. They’ll manage fortnightly payments over three years, allowing them to avoid costly bank interest.

Outcome

This setup allows the owners to generate and store enough renewable energy to cover most of their household electricity needs and charge their EV, dramatically reducing reliance on the grid and locking in lower energy costs for years to come. The smart design also means they can easily upgrade their charger or add extra capacity in future if needed.

Why it’s a standout

This project shows how thoughtful system design and smart use of available incentives can deliver maximum long-term savings – in this case around $19,000 in up-front costs! By combining large-scale battery storage, smart EV integration and practical choices like avoiding unnecessary permits, it shows how to do solar and storage properly – ready for today and tomorrow.
